    Recent advances in depth measurement and its utilization have made point cloud processing more critical. Additionally, the human head is essential for communication, and its three-dimensional data are expected to be utilized in this regard. However, a single RGB-Depth (RGBD) camera is prone to occlusion and depth measurement failure for dark hair colors such as black hair. Recently, point cloud completion, where an entire point cloud is estimated and generated from a partial point cloud, has been studied, but only the shape is learned, rather than the completion of colored point clouds. Thus, this paper proposes a machine learning-based completion method for colored point clouds with XYZ location information and the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) LAB (L*a*b*) color information. The proposed method uses the color difference between point clouds based on the Chamfer Distance (CD) or Earth Mover’s Distance (EMD) of point cloud shape evaluation as a color loss. In addition, an adversarial loss to L*a*b*-Depth images rendered from the output point cloud can improve the visual quality. The experiments examined networks trained using a colored point cloud dataset created by combining two 3D datasets: hairstyles and faces. Experimental results show that using the adversarial loss with the colored point cloud renderer in the proposed method improves the image domain’s evaluation.

    Copyright © 2018 by ITE Transactions on Media Technology and Applications (MTA). This paper proposes a point groups-based algorithm for point cloud registration. Most of the existing algorithms align two point clouds globally; however, they are unsuitable when the overlapping ratio is low or the inputs do not have strong features. The high accuracy of matched points is conducive for a rigid transformation of point clouds. This study aims to determine the exact matching points to register point clouds. The proposed method is based on point groups that are resampled point clouds. Subsequently, we calculate the multiple average probability (MAP) for each point group and match them by a sparse representation. Finally, the coherent point drift (CPD) algorithm is used to register the matched point groups, and the same transformation is applied to register the point clouds. The experimental results show that in terms of robustness to noise and outliers, our algorithm can register point clouds with a low overlapping ratio.

    Stereoscopic video technology, which enables three-dimensional (3D) images to be displayed, has been developing rapidly. However, existing devices are unable to achieve accurate color reproduction. This paper proposes a method to accurately reproduce the colors displayed by a multiband 3D projector. Previously, we proposed a stereoscopic display system with an expanded color gamut. However, we only confirmed the expansion of the color gamut of the proposed system and were unable to display stereoscopic images with accurate colors. We now propose an accurate color and spectral reproduction method for a stereoscopic image display system for which we developed an expanded color gamut by means of the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES). The system design for optimizing the color reproduction of the multiband 3D projector is described. An experimental evaluation of the color reproducibility showed the performance of the proposed method to be superior to that of an existing method.

    In recent years, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been developed and applied to various simulations for business and commercial use. In these simulations, computer graphics (CG) becomes very important to express virtual objects, and there are many studies on the expression of cloth. Some optical properties of an object are necessary to represent cloth with CG. These optical properties depend on the material of the thread, the number of threads, and the thickness. Therefore it is difficult to represent clothes corresponding to these changes. This study proposes a method to formulate the reflection and transmittance that depend on the component of the cloths. To formulate the reflection, we use the Kubelka-Munk theory and the component of the cloth that can be easily obtained using a smartphone, etc.

    This paper proposes a method for estimating 3D information, such as shape, orientation, size, and position of objects in a monocular image, and reproduce scenes in 3D point clouds using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). This study proposes a network that combines depth estimation, object detection, and point cloud estimation to estimate 3D information of objects. The proposed network requires networks for object detection and segmentation, and a point cloud estimation for object shape estimation. The point cloud estimation network is robust to the reproduction of the object's surface and can deal with unknown objects through a semantic understanding of the object's shape. In addition to these networks, we combine a depth estimation network for estimating the depth of the entire scene and the distance between the camera and object. In this paper, we consider the point cloud estimation network. We estimate the point clouds for real objects in the images of the dataset and evaluate the output point clouds.

    Recently, object recognition using CNN is widespread. Still, medical images do not have a sufficient number of images because they require the doctor's findings in the training dataset. On such a small-scale dataset, there is a problem that CNN cannot realize enough high recognition accuracy. As a solution to this problem, there is a method called transfer learning that reuses the weights learned on a large dataset. In addition, there is research on a method of pruning parameters unimportant for the target task during transfer learning. In this study, after transfer learning is performed, the convolution filter is evaluated using pruning, and the low evaluation filter is replaced with the high evaluation filter. In order to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method in recognition accuracy, we compare it with the three methods, i.e., transfer learning only, pruning, and initializing the filter. As a result, we were able to obtain a high recognition accuracy compared to other methods. We confirmed that CNN might be affected by replacing the filter in object recognition of small-scale datasets.

    In recent years, research on virtual fitting has been conducted in the fashion field. Many of them have been put to practical use in prepared clothes, and companies are using the information on the shape, size, and fabric of their clothes to provide users with virtual fitting. In the case without known data, there are many methods of estimating the shape and size of the clothes in images. Using these methods, users can try on virtually the clothes they want to wear while fitting the users' body shape and pose. On the other hand, a method for estimating the fabric of clothes remains to be developed. Because the materials of clothes are related to the softness of clothes in virtual fitting, it is difficult to reproduce the realistic movements and wrinkles of clothes using the conventional virtual fitting system. This study proposes a method for estimating the material of fabric from clothes images, aiming at realistic virtual fitting. A dataset focusing on each fabric's texture and luster is constructed and estimated using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

    Cleaning is inseparable in life, but it is impossible to see with the naked eye where the room was actually cleaned. For this reason, if information on the location where the cleaning was performed cannot be shared when cleaning by multiple people, there is a possibility that an unclean area is remained. Therefore, if Augmented Reality (AR) can be used to visualize the passing area of the hand or cleaning tool being cleaned, it will lead to improve cleaning efficiency and increase motivation by visualizing the cleaning area. The purpose of this research is to obtain and superimpose the location information of the passing area using Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) in order to visualize the passing area of the hand or the cleaning tool using AR.

    This paper describes a method for measurement of HDR spectral video. In recent years, it is necessary to record images with more accurate color information in various fields such as digital archive, electronic museum, telemedicine, and so on. HDR images and spectral images are one of solutions to the problem. However, in order to acquire these images, it is generally necessary to lengthen the exposure time or replace the filter. Due to these problems, it took time and effort to acquire HDR images and spectral images. So, we propose a system that combines HDR image and spectral image by using four filters and RGB camera. In this paper, after introducing the technology of the previous research, we explain about the proposed method and finally evaluate the result.

    When the printed material is imaged by a monocular digital camera, geometric distortions caused due to folds result in a different appearance from the content of the original printed material. This study aims to reproduce appearance by correction the obtained image. As a proposed method, the geometric distortion is corrected by deforming each local area after dividing the printed material image into local areas. In addition, the brightness change by shading is also corrected.

    In recent years, many SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) systems have appeared showing impressive dense scene reconstruction. However, the normal SLAM system build 3D scenes at point level without any semantic information. Many computer vision applications require high ability of scene understanding and point-based SLAM shows insufficiency in these applications. This paper studies about fusing 3D object recognition into SLAM system, using hand-held RGB-D camera and RTAB-Map to reconstruct dense point cloud of 3D indoor scene. Then we use supervoxel based point cloud segmentation approaches to over-segment the scene. 3D object classification model trained by PointNet is added to merge the segmentation process and object recognition. Our experiment on indoor environment shows the effectiveness of this system.

    There are some problems in internet shopping such as products return due to size mismatch. This problem is serious in internet shopping of shoes because wearing feeling are particularly important for shoes. So, we aim to make a shoes recommendation system using three-dimensional data of foot and shoe in order to decrease problem of size mismatch. This paper proposes a visualization method for fitting condition of foot and shoe and feature extraction method of shoe three-dimensional data. We also create a linear regression model that predicts the features of the reference shoes. Standard size table of shoe is made by applying the regression model of reference shoes to other shoes.

    By the progress of Computer Graphics(CG) technology, it has become possible to create high quality human CG objects. To make them operate real, high quality motion data is needed. Generally, motion data is created by a motion capture system. However, the cost and time required for creating many motion data can't be ignored. In particular, when connecting motions, it takes time and effort to adjust. Addition, connecting motion as not to cause discomfort is very difficult. When the number of motion data is n, there are n-n connections of motion in all. It is not realistic to manually adjust all of them. Therefore, this research proposes a method to automatically generate connection between arbitrary motions using convolutional filter. It's considered that the efficiency of CG motion creation can be improved by means of the proposed method.

    This paper proposes a sightseeing guidance system using a beacon and markerless AR which is robust with time. This system provides users with sightseeing guidance by AR without spoiling the scenery.

    Wheelchair user has a difficult problem to confirm backward in their life. In order to support backward movement of the wheelchair user, this paper proposes a method presenting the information such as obstacles and stairs behind the user in an easy-to-understand way. Obstacles and steps are detected by installing the RGB-D camera directly above the wheelchair user. Also the distance between wheelchair and obstacles are calculated by using respective three-dimensional coordinate position.

This proposed method resamples point clouds into a large number of small point cloud groups, then matches the group between point clouds by Plane Distance histogram (PAD) of each groups based on sparse representation.

This paper proposes an accurate color and spectral reproduction method of a three-dimensional image display system with expanded color gamut using covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES).
