    RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To analyze morphological changes in patients with COVID-19-associated pneumonia over time, a nonrigid registration technique is required that reduces differences in respiratory phase and imaging position and does not excessively deform the lesion region. A nonrigid registration method using deep learning was applied for lung field alignment, and its practicality was verified through quantitative evaluation, such as image similarity of whole lung region and image similarity of lesion region, as well as visual evaluation by a physician. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, the lung field positions and sizes of the first and second CT images were roughly matched using a classical registration method based on iterative calculations as a preprocessing step. Then, voxel-by-voxel transformation was performed using VoxelMorph, a nonrigid deep learning registration method. As an objective evaluation, the similarity of the images was calculated. To evaluate the invariance of image features in the lesion site, primary statistics and 3D shape features were calculated and statistically analyzed. Furthermore, as a subjective evaluation, the similarity of images and whether nonrigid transformation caused unnatural changes in the shape and size of the lesion region were visually evaluated by a pulmonologist. RESULTS: The proposed method was applied to 509 patient data points with high image similarity. The variances in histogram characteristics before and after image deformation were confirmed. Visual evaluation confirmed the agreement between the shape and internal structure of the lung field and the natural deformation of the lesion region. CONCLUSION: The developed nonrigid registration method was shown to be effective for quantitative time series analysis of the lungs.

    Abstract A stroke is a medical emergency and thus requires immediate treatment. Paramedics should accurately assess suspected stroke patients and promptly transport them to a hospital with stroke care facilities; however, current assessment procedures rely on subjective visual assessment. We aim to develop an automatic evaluation system for central facial palsy (CFP) that uses RGB cameras installed in an ambulance. This paper presents two evaluation indices, namely the symmetry of mouth movement and the difference in mouth shape, respectively, extracted from video frames. These evaluation indices allow us to quantitatively evaluate the degree of facial palsy. A classification model based on these indices can discriminate patients with CFP. The results of experiments using our dataset show that the values of the two evaluation indices are significantly different between healthy subjects and CFP patients. Furthermore, our classification model achieved an area under the curve of 0.847. This study demonstrates that the proposed automatic evaluation system has great potential for quantitatively assessing CFP patients based on two evaluation indices.

    The image of spectral absorbance in human skin is analyzed by independent component analysis. The spectral absorbance image is estimated from an image with red, green, and blue channels. The qualitative information and spatial distribution of the pigments can be extracted by the independent component analysis. It is shown that the extracted absorption characteristics of the pigments are corresponding to those of hemoglobin and melanin.

    The method proposed for extracting goniospectral information of 3D objects is reformulated in more exact form. Especially the illumination direction is expressed in both azimuthal and elevation angle. It is shown that extending the range of illumination direction to two dimension leads to provide useful model parameters including the surface normal of the object. Experimental results of the display simulation are also presented to demonstrate the visual effect of changing the light source distribution.

    A spectral color reproduction method is proposed based on a vector error diffusion method. A low-dimensional linear model is used to approximate reflectance spectra, and the vector error diffusion is performed in a score vector space of the linear model. A suitable set of primary colors is also selected from oil colors. Presented method performed better than conventional colorimetric vector error diffusion method for robust color reproduction for a change of illuminant.

    Digital imaging systems consist of three devices; acquisition, recording, and display. In this research, the system is formulated as linear model for evaluating and improving the total image quality with respect to sharpness and graininess. On the basis of the model, the subjective quality of degraded image is estimated, then the model is applied to improve the image quality. The experimental results showed that the method proposed in this research is effective for evaluation and improvement of the image quality.

    The quality of images produced by multi-level error diffusion was evaluated both subjectively and objectively. The images were recorded on color transparencies by a digital film recorder with a resolution of 1600 dpi. Thirty-six sample images with four different resolutions and nine different quantization levels were prepared, and the tone reproduction, color reproduction, graininess and sharpness of the images were analyzed and evaluated. We found that the graininess gives the strongest influence on the quality of the image. The relationship between observer rating values and measured quality criteria are also discussed.

    Transmittance spectra of optical micrograph of fungi were estimated from seven band images based on the Wiener estimation method. The optical microscope adjusted with monochrome digital camera (Kodak DCS420m, 1536x1024 pixels) with seven band filters was used for image acquisition. Transmittance spectra of 16 color transparencies were measured by spectral photometer in advance, and the seven band images of color transparency were taken by microscopic imaging system. A matrix for Wiener estimation was calculated using these measured transmittance spectra and camera responses. As the result of Wiener estimation, normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) between the original and estimated transmittance spectra of 16 color transparencies was 0.035. Wiener estimation method was applied to estimate the spectral transmittance of five species which belong to one genus of fungi. Transmittance spectra of fungi were calculated from camera responses in each pixel and the above estimation matrix. The estimated transmittance spectra were used for segmentation of conidia and hyphae in fungal microscopic image to identify them. Competitive learning in neural network was applied to the segmentation from spectral microscopic image. It was found that segmentation based on spectral transmittance was more accurate than the segmentation based on RGB values.

    We improved the incomplete chromatic adaptation model proposed by Fairchild to reproduce facial pattern images under various illuminants. We introduced weighting coefficients in the modified fundamental chromaticities of the adapting stimulus used in the Fairchild model to improve the color reproduction. Psychophysical experiments using memory matching technique were performed to select the optimum weighting coefficients of adapting stimulus for facial pattern images. The improved model with the optimum coefficients was compared with other color appearance models, von Kries, RLAB, LLAB, and colorimetric color reproduction under three illuminants; illuminant A (2837 K), Daylight (6047 K) and Cool White (3957 K). As a result, it was shown that the improved model performed significantly well for facial pattern images if compared with other models.

    In this article, we study a color reproduction method to match the appearance of skin color images on a CRT with a hardcopy under various viewing illuminants. Three color appearance models von Kries, Fairchild, and CIELAB, were applied to predict color reproduction on a CRT display. The optimum color appearance model to predict color reproduction was estimated by psychophysical experiments based on memory matching. As a result of the experiment, differences in visual perception between skin color patches and facial pattern images are also described.

    This paper proposes a new Wiener estimation method for reconstructing current distribution from biomagnetic measurement. The present method is an improved version of the method proposed by Sekihara et al.(1), which is based on estimating the source-current correlation matrix from the measured-data correlation matrix. In our method, the regularization term used in pseudo inversion of the lead field matrix is modified so as to reduce the artifact due to noise more efficiently. The parameters in the modified regularization term are determined, not empirically: but optimally based on the measured data. Computer simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    This paper proposes a new and simple algorithm for face extraction from a color image. The approach detects the lip region in a face object. First, the lip- and skin-color pixels in an image are extracted on the basis of statistical probability analysis. These lip- and skin-color pixels are segmented separately by using binary image processing techniques to produce lip- and skin-color regions. Each region that has a skin-color region and one or more lip color regions as its subset regions is nominated as a face candidate. To detect only the face objects from the face candidates, the algorithm evaluates the values of seven pattern variables of those face candidates. A face candidate with all its seven pattern variable values within the valid range values of face object class is detected as a face object. Verifications of the proposed algorithm were provided by the experimental results that gave 91.8% detection of face objects from 104 sample images. This is significant for locating or detecting the faces in color images.

    けん銃またはライフル銃から発射された弾丸には発射銃器に固有の微小な傷や凹凸等の特徴が線条痕の形で転写される。本研究では, 現在専門家による比較観察と主観的判断に任されている線条痕照合とそれによる発射銃器の同定作業を, 計算機により定量的に行うことを試みた。同一銃によって発射された2個の弾丸から線条痕の顕微鏡画像各5枚を撮影し, 入力データとした。各画像から1次元濃淡波形を抽出し, これらの問の類似性を定量化した。次に定量化した類似性に確率モデルを適用し, 着目した類似領域の有意性を計算した。その結果, 線条痕領域のうちの一部分の類似性だけからでも有意水準10-6で同定が可能であった。この結果は, 本手法による線条痕自動照合の可能性を示すものと考えられた。

    Image quality from electronic endoscopes is poor compared with that from conventional optical endoscopes that use color film. Our goal is to improve the image quality, particularly the color reproduction of electronic endoscopes. To achieve our goal, we have developed the endoscopie spectrophotometer to measure the spectral reflectance of gastric mucous membranes. Three hundred and ten spectra have been analyzed by principal component analysis. The results indicate that the reflectance spectra can be adequately described using only three principal components. Based on the above experimental result, we show that the spectral reflectance of gastric mucous membranes can be calculated from the R, G, B signals of conventional electronic endoscopes. Therefore, spectral reflectance of all pixels in gastric mucous membranes taken by electronic endoscopes can be estimated within less than the average color difference ΔE*uv = 2.66 in the L*u*v* color space. Computer simulations of the color reproduction of electronic endoscopes were performed, and the resulting spectral characteristics under various illuminants are described and analyzed.

    We propose a new method to predict the images on a CRT and a hardcopy of skin color under various illuminants. Spectral reflectance of human skin is analyzed by principal component analysis and it is shown that the spectral reflectance can be estimated by three basis functions. The estimation allows colorimetric color reproduction without colorimetric measurements for each illuminant. The proposed method is verified by several skin color patches taken by a calibrated HDTV camera. The method is also applied to practical facial pattern images.

    In this paper, we propose a new objective evaluation-value for the quality of digital halftoning images. The proposed evaluation-value are calculated based on the spatial frequencies of original and halftoning images. The viewing conditions are also considered in the evaluation-value as a visual contrast sensitivity function. We had an experiment to examine the relationship between the proposed evaluation-value and subjective evaluation. The four ordered dither methods and an error diffusion method were evaluated in the experiment. We found the proposed objective evaluation-value has high correlation with the subjective evaluation value obtained from the result of the experiment.

    Applying the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) to compress electronic endoscope image, the selection of color space is important for an effective compression. In this study, the RGB, YCrCb, YIQ, I1I2I3 and CIELAB color spaces were examined and compared for data compression. The image quality of electronic endoscope images compressed in these color spaces was evaluated by both psychophysical experiment and numerical measures. The results indicate that the RGB color space is the effective color space on the numerical analysis, and the CIELAB color space is the effective color space on the psychophysical experiment. However, the distortion of image region with high luminance is imperceptible in RGB color space compared with other color spaces.

    蛍光表示管型カラープリンタでは,プリントヘッドにおける各発光素子の輝度分布の不均一性のために濃度むらが生じる.本論文では,濃度むらの補正法を提案すると共に,実機を用いた実験結果より提案手法の有効性を示す.

    潰瘍性大腸炎の病期は一般に活動期,緩解期,正常に大別される.本論文では,潰瘍性大腸炎の電子内視鏡画像を計算機により解析し,その進行程度の分類,特に緩解期と正常の分類を試みた.緩解期と正常の画像計61枚に対し, まずしきい値処理などにより血管抽出を行った.更に,抽出された血管像より血管透見度,血管網の複雑度を算出し,緩解期と正常の分類を行った. この結果,緩解期と正常の病期分類は医師の診断結果とよく対応し,本手法による病期分類の可能性が示された.

    Strong moire patterns sometimes appear in the reconstruction of optically scanned halftone images. Various dither methods such as an error diffusion and a blue noise mask have been proposed to avoid this phenomenon. The dot pattern method, however, has not been designed to avoid the moire patterns. In this paper, a new dot pattern method is proposed to avoid the moire patterns with a good image quality. Image quality and the resistance to moire effects of the proposed halftoning method are analyzed and compared with the conventional halftoning method by Fourier spectral analysis.

    本研究では,慢性胃炎の診断上重要と言われる胃粘膜の萎縮性変化に着目し,その進行程度を定量的に解析することを試みる.萎縮性変化の進行程度そのものを内視鏡的に測定する手段は存在しないため,医師が萎縮の程度を判定するために用いている三つの画像情報,すなわち血管透見の程度,粘膜面の退色変化,および粘膜面の不整度に対応する特徴量により定量化することを考える.17例の胃粘膜像についてこれらを算出し,医師による萎縮判定の結果との整合性を調べた.この結果,算出された特徴量と3段階の萎縮判定との比較的よい対応が得られた.更にこれら三つの特徴量の線形和で萎縮度を定量化するモデルを導入し,これにより定量化した萎縮度と医師の判定とのよい対応が得られた.
