    Melanin is a widely occurring biopolymer and has been the subject of much research, especially in dermatology. However, from a resource perspective, melanin is still an unutilized biomass because of its complex three-dimensional cross-linked structure, which makes it challenging to handle. Here, we demonstrate melanin upcycling by decomposing melanin and preparing polymeric materials from its products. A detailed study of the chemical decomposition products of artificial melanin, i.e., polydopamine, reveals that the melanin decomposition products are mainly oligomeric pyrrole derivatives containing carboxylic acids. Furthermore, decomposition experiments using natural melanin extracted from cuttlefish ink revealed that the composition of melanin decomposition products is almost identical regardless of the melanin source. We proposed a melanin decomposition mechanism and demonstrated the preparation of biobased polymer films and particles from melanin decomposition products. The use of melanin decomposition products as building blocks for material preparation is expected to lead to the development of new biodegradable polymers from biomass.

    The columnar polarization direction of ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals can be switched by applying an external electric field, and the polarization direction can be maintained, even after the electric field is removed. If the polarization direction of each column in ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals can be switched and maintained, then ultrahigh-density memory devices can be generated. Recently, we found that the columnar phase of N,N′-bis(3,4,5-tri(S)-citronellyloxyphenyl)urea (Urea-(S)-cit) shows ferroelectricity, whereas that of N,N′-bis(3,4,5-tridecyloxyphenyl)urea (Urea-10) does not. However, the mechanisms by which the six chiral alkoxy groups in Urea-(S)-cit generate ferroelectricity have not been determined. In this study, we regioselectively synthesized four diphenylurea compounds containing (S)-citronellyloxy and decyloxy groups, i.e., N,N′-bis(3,5-di((S)-citronellyloxy)-4-decyloxyphenyl)urea (1), N,N′-bis(4-((S)-citronellyloxy)-3,5-didecyloxyphenyl)urea (2), N,N′-bis(3-((S)-citronellyloxy)-4,5-didecyloxyphenyl)urea (3), and N,N′-bis(3,4-di((S)-citronellyloxy)-5-decyloxyphenyl)urea (4), and investigated which chiral alkoxy group at which position is strongly responsible for the ferroelectricity. The chiral alkoxy groups at 3- and 5-positions of the phenyl groups were clarified to play a significant role in the generation of ferroelectricity. Furthermore, a comparison of these four compounds based on circular dichroism spectroscopy and second harmonic generation experiments revealed the relationship between the helical structure order and the stability of the polarized structure.

    Abstract Here, an unprecedented phenomenon in which 7‐coordinate lanthanide metallomesogens, which align via hydrogen bonds mediated by coordinated H2O molecules, form micellar cubic mesophases at room temperature, creating body‐centered cubic (BCC)‐type supramolecular spherical arrays, is reported. The results of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that spherical assemblies of three complexes surrounded by an amorphous alkyl domain spontaneously align in an energetically stable orientation to form the BCC structure. This phenomenon differs greatly from the conventional self‐assembling behavior of 6‐coordinated metallomesogens, which form columnar assemblies due to strong intermolecular interactions. Since the magnetic and luminescent properties of different lanthanides vary, adding arbitrary functions to spherical arrays is possible by selecting suitable lanthanides to be used. The method developed in this study using 7‐coordinate lanthanide metallomesogens as building blocks is expected to lead to the rational development of micellar cubic mesophases.

    The realization of ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals (FCLCs) capable of axial polarization switching along the column axis at room temperature (RT) is an important breakthrough in the practical application of FCLCs. However, molecules exhibiting FCLC phases generally have low fluidity at RT, which inhibits the response of polar functional groups to an applied external electric field, making changing the direction of the column polarity difficult. Here, we report RT-FCLCs, N,N′-bis(3,4-dialkoxyphenyl)ureas, driven by a low electric field. The introduction of bulky branched alkyl chains lowered the temperature range of the columnar liquid crystal phases, resulting in a fluid-assembled state with moderate hydrogen bonding that allowed polarization switching at RT. Comparison of these synthesized ureas revealed that reductions in the bulk and length of the side chains produced longer retention times of the polarization. Our thermodynamic analyses clarified that these ureas have high enough depolarization activation energy to maintain polarization, despite a low coercive field of a few V μm-1. Furthermore, the retention time of the columnar liquid crystal phase dramatically increased as the temperature neared RT, indicating an increase in the slowness of molecular motion, reminiscent of the vitrification process. We established a methodology to achieve FCLCs with the desired performance by selecting the alkyl chain to be introduced.

    In this study, we show that doping lanthanides into lamellar crystals reorganizes the lamellar structure and dramatically changes the crystal morphology. Azo-DA, a compound with azobenzene derivatives and carboxylic acids at both ends of the diacetylene moiety, formed plate-like lamellar crystals. The doping of holmium (Ho), a lanthanide, into the film obtained by stacking Azo-DA lamellar crystals, promoted a dramatic change in crystal morphology, resulting in the formation of an Azo-DA/Ho film with a radial lamellar crystal structure. A detailed investigation of the crystal growth process revealed that Azo-DA/Ho, which is slightly formed in the solution phase during Ho doping, acts as a pseudonucleating agent and dramatically changes the morphology of the lamellar crystals. Additionally, the morphological changes in the lamellar crystal films significantly changed the surface properties of the films, such as their appearance and water repellency. Similar morphological changes in lamellar crystals were induced when other lanthanide elements were used instead of Ho, and the type of lanthanide dopant can affect the magnetic properties of the films.

    <p>N,N'-bis(3,4,5-trialkyloxyphenyl)glutaramide and malonamide were synthesized and characterized. Both of the compounds exhibited a columnar liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range including room temperature. In the second harmonic generation measurements, they showed polarization reversal by an applied external electric field in the liquid crystal temperature range including room temperature. In addition, the glutaramide derivative showed partial polarization maintenance even after removal of the external electric field.</p>

    <p>Development of organic ferroelectrics in columnar liquid crystals (FCLCs) is desired for functional materials with flexibility and low environmental load. Though FCLCs have been achieved by adjusting the molecular shapes or the hydrogen bonds, the strong intra-columnar interaction between mesogenic cores generally results in high temperatures (> 100 °C) exhibiting FCLCs. Here, a low-temperature FCLC (> 63 °C) was generated in a urea compound with racemic branched alkyl chains. Introducing the bulky chains appropriately reduced the intra-columnar interaction, and the urea compound had high fluidity even at low temperatures, exhibiting polarization switching and polarization maintenance.</p>

    <p>In this study, we have aimed to achieve high-ordering and spontaneous chiral induction of columnar liquid crystal phases driven by the tight packing of peripheral bent tail-shaped chains. We synthesized a disk-shaped molecule surrounded by six oleyl groups, and investigated the generation of a helical structure in the column, and the high-ordering of intercolumnar packing structure. We also evaluated the spontaneous chiral induction. The results suggested that the introduction of the bent tail-shaped chain is effective for the high-ordering of the columnar phases.</p>

    <p>Axially polarized ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals are expected to be a great candidate for ultra-high density memory device if the polar direction of each column can be controlled. Here, a diphenyl urea derivative possessing six racemic chains was synthesized. Its phase transition behaviors were characterized by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Second harmonic generation measurement revealed switching of the axial polar directions by applying an external voltage and remaining of the induced polarity after removal of the external voltage. Hence, the compound was confirmed to be ferroelectric. Further, the circular dichroism spectra of its thin film were measured to investigate the mechanism of realization of the ferroelectric columnar liquid crystal.</p>

    <p>Columnar liquid crystals with ferroelectricity are expected to be applied to high-density memory devices by controlling the polarization direction of each column with a nanoscale diameter. Recently, we reported that a diphenylurea derivative achieved a perfect ferroelectric columnar liquid crystal phase. However, due to the strong intracolumnar interaction, the ferroelectricity was observed only at high temperature (105-144°C), which is problematic when considering the application. In this study, we synthesized and characterized two novel amide compounds. As a result, one of them generated an electro-responsive columnar liquid crystal phase at room temperature.</p>

    <p>Although the construction of double-helix structures is an important challenge in supramolecular chemistry, no general construction method has been established for columnar liquid crystal phases. In this study, we have designed and synthesized a new urea molecule with an extended core and six chiral chains, and attempted to construct a double-helix structure in a columnar phase. In the columnar liquid crystal phase, the molecules were self-organized into a double-helix structure, according to the concept (anti-parallel dimerization → intermolecular hydrogen-bond network → chirality-induced helix formation).</p>

    <p>In this study, we focus on a double helix structure known as a basic structure of DNAs in order tomaintain the induced polarization. The structure is important to protect a genetic information in DNA. Here,we synthesized Urea PE-(S)-Citronellyl which has an extended core and six chiral alkyl chainsy. Thecompound exhibited columnar liquid crystal phases. The 1D and 2D-XRD measurements showed the peaksoriginated in its double helix structure. Furthermore, the column alingment was changed to homeotropic oneby applying an external electric field. During the application, the column had an induced polarization alongits axis.After removal of the external electric field, part of the polarization was maintained, as expected,though the remnant polarization also relaxed after 5 min. Hence, we found the possibility that a doublehelix structure is effective for stabilizing the polarization of column.</p>

    <p>Ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals are materials in which the polar direction can be controlled by applying a voltage and can be maintained after removal of the voltage. In this study, we present an example of a perfectly bistable ferroelectric columnar liquid crystalline phase using a chiral urea compound. Electrical measurements show that this compound has a relatively faster response speed in the liquid crystal phase (0.19 sec) and hold the polar structure for over 10 hours. Furthermore, a helical structure in the liquid crystal phase was confirmed from the circular dichroism spectra. In addition to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, intra-columnar interaction derived from the helical structure stabilize the polar structure.</p>

    <p>Liquid crystalline urea derivatives indicate good electro-responsiveness, and their homeotropic and homogeneous alignments can be easily switched by application and removal of an external electric field. In this study, the columns of liquid crystalline ureas ware cross-linked with controlling the alignment by an external voltage application, and a cross-linked thin film sample on which the macro dipoles ware aligned in one direction was fabricated. After investigating the thermal and electrical characteristics of the thin film, application researches for piezoelectric responsive materials ware also conducted.</p>

    <p>A diphenyl urea derivative rac-1 possessing six racemic citronellyl groups was synthesized. Compound rac-1 is not a single stereoisomer but a mixture of 21 stereoisomers. From measurements of POM, DSC and XRD measurements, it was found that rac-1 exhibited rectangular and hexagonal columnar phases. It showed switching of polar direction by applying an external voltage and remaining of the polarity after removal of the external voltage. Hence, we confirmed that rac-1 had ferroelectricity in the rectangular columnar phase. Further, its circular dichroism spectra of thin film were measured to investigate whether chiral self-sorting was occurred.</p>

    <p>To realize ferroelectrically switchable biaxial smectic A phases, perfluoroarene-arene (PFA-A) interaction and a bent chain structure were introduced to rod-like molecules. In ferroelectric switching experiments, the molecules with a bent terminal chain showed much larger spontaneous polarization (Ps) values than those with a straight terminal chain. Further, it was clarified that directional change of the long molecular axes were suppressed in the case of the molecules possessing a bent terminal chain. From these results, it was confirmed that introduction of a bent terminal chain is highly effective for realizing the ferroelectric switching behaviors.</p>

    <p>Lanthanides have a high magnetic moment derived from 4f orbital electrons not involved in bonding. In this study, we focused on the orientationally order of the columnar liquid crystal phase to improve the magnetic properties by increasing the orientation of lanthanides. We tried to synthesize eight-vertex coordination compound containing lanthanide as the central metal, and investigated their liquid crystallinity and magnetic properties.</p>

    In this research, the chiral dopant molecules derived from tartaric acid was utilized for enlarging HTPs in nematic phases and widening blue phase temperature ranges. As a result, we clarified that the HTPs were affected by the interaction of the liquid crystalline and the chiral dopant molecules. Furthermore, we found that the liquid crystal mixture composed of 1f, EBBA and the diol alkane showed the widest blue phase temperature range on heating in this study.

    We have been studying electro-responsive columnar liquid crystalline ureas. In this study, we attempted to synthesize novel ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals. To stabilize ferroelectricity acetyl groups were introduced at the terminal alkylchains of the urea compound. Moreover, we tried to switch the polarity of only the area where an electric field was applied in the liquid crystal phase.

    We recently synthesized a chiral dopant DA (Scheme1), with two rod-like units and a rigid arched unit. It is predicted that DA thermally decomposes and to recombines through retro-Diels-Alder and Diels-Alder reaction of anthracene and fumaryl ester. In a chiral nematic phase, it is expected that these reactions proceed with a favorable enantioselectivity due to the helical alignment of liquid crystal molecules generated by DA. The purposes of this study are to pursue the behavior of DA in liquid crystal phase and to realize chirality retention in the racemization condition. The equilibrium constant K was caluculated by 1H-NMR of DA heated in d8-toluene. The mixture of DA and host-LC(figure 1) was observed by POM and the amount of DA was monitered by HPLC.

    Compound 1 possessing two urea groups in the molcule were designed and synthesized. Its phase transition was measured by polarized light optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetery. In Xray diffraction measurement, it was classified that compound 1 exhibited a rectangular columnar phase. To confirm its ferroelectricity, optoelectronic and SHG experiments were carried out.

    To realize high density memory devices, a supramolecular compound was designed and synthesized. This compound is composed of a central urea and two trialkoxy benzoic acids possessing six polymerizable sites. After polymerization, it was expected that the polymer network stabilized the polarity of the linear urea network. To investigate the liquid-cristallinity and electro-responsiveness, polarlized optical microscope (POM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and triangular wave voltage application are used.

    Mesomorphic urea compound 1 and polymerizable compound 2 were synthesized. Compound 1 exhibited a columnar mesophase. Though compound 1 showed a ferroelectric behavior, the polarity did not maintain because of the electrostatic repulsion between columns. Intercolumnar polymer network was structured in the columnar phase of 1 by addition of 2 followed by its polymerization. This network increases threshold between two polarized states. Realization of ferroelectricity is expected by that.

    We synthesized nonpolar liquid crystalline molecules consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms. The rod-like compounds exhibited nematic liquid crystal phases. Despite the lack of hetero-atoms or polar groups, our nematic compounds showed electro-responsiveness in their retardation. We investigated their phase transition behaviors and liquid crystallinities by using a polarized light microscope (POM), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and one- and two-dimensional X-ray diffractometers (1D-XRD and 2D-XRD).

    In this study, I synthesized liquid crystalline thiourea-compounds with a polarization in the axial direction. The compounds exhibited hexagonal columnar and liquid crystal phases. We investigated their phase transitions and superstructures by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and one- and two-dimentional X-ray diffractions (XRD). In addition, we tried realization of an electro-responsive helical nano-structure.

    In order to develop fluorescent ionic liquid crystals, we prepared pyridinium salts possessing an anthracene fluorophore as a core. The salts showed columnar liquid crystal phases. The films derived from their liquid crystals by rapid cooling exhibited fluorescence wavelength longer than that of their powdery samples. Solvent-polarity-dependent fluorescence was observed specifically for the hexafluorophosphates.

    For realizing ferroelectric columnar mesophases, we synthesized novel liquid crystalline ureas. The compounds exhibited two types of columnar and smectic A liquid crystal phases. We investigated their phase behaviors and superstructures by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and one- and two-dimentional X-ray diffractions (XRD). In addition, we investigated their ferroelectric switching behaviors by applying a triangular wave voltage. As a result, some of the compounds showed current response peaks induced by the polar switching behavior.

    The substituent effect of the N-alkyl chain of chiral tartarimides on stabilization of blue phases was investigated in the nematic phases of 5CB and EBBA. We investigated their HTPs and selective reflection wavelengths by polarized optical microscopy and spectroscopic microscopy. We discussed the influence of these compounds on the properties of blue phases.

    In this study, effective chiral dopants possessing both rod-and arch-like control sites for the molecular arrangements were synthesized. In the nematic phases doped with these dopant compounds, their HTP values and generation of blue phases were investigated. As the result, the dopant showed very large HTPs, which indicated our methodology was suitable for generation of strong helicity. Further, the structure effect of the arch-site was investigated by the comparison of the homologues 1, 2 and 3.

    In order to realize an electro-responsive change in smectic layer spacings, we synthesized novel straight fluorinated rod-like molecules. We also synthesized the corresponding non-fluorinated rod-like molecules for the comparison. We investigated their liquid crystal behaviors by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and one-and two-dimentional X-ray diffraction (XRD). All fluorinated compounds showed SmA and non-fluorinated compounds showed N and SmC. The 1D-XRD of all fluorinated compounds show a sharp peak corresponding to the molecular length, which indicated these liquid crystalline compounds had a highly ordered lamellar structure.

    イオン液体は、その不揮発性、触媒活性、高イオン伝導性から注目を浴びており、反応溶媒、抽出溶媒としての用途のみならず各種デバイス用の電解質材料としての期待も高まっている。イオン液体類似のイオン液晶はミクロ相分離が容易に起こり、液晶相の安定化が期待できる。さらに、非等方的なナノ構造を有するイオン液晶は、等方相状態に比べ、イオン伝導度が大きく向上することが報告されている。当研究室ではこれまでに水素結合を利用した超分子型のイオン液晶を開発し、スメクチック相、カラムナー相、キュービック相といった多彩な液晶相が発現することを報告してきた。本研究では、効率的なイオン伝導材料の構築を目指し、水素結合アクセプターとして働くピリジルイミダゾリウム塩をコアとし、末端に重合基としてアクリレートを導入した安息香酸誘導体からなる水素結合性の超分子型錯体を作製し、液晶性を調査した。アクリレート基の導入により、液晶相転移温度の減少が見られた。

    Supramolecularly assembled discotic liquid crystals were prepared from isophtahlic acid derivatives substituted with 3,4,5-tridodecyloxystyryl group via intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carboxys. The compounds exhibited columnar liquid crystal phases. Structural characterization of superstructures was performed by polarized light optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments.

    Novel zwitterionic liquid crystalline compounds possessing imidazolium or ammonium as a cationic part and carboxylate as a counter ion were synthesized. Their phase transition behaviors and also the effect of the addition of lithium salts was examined. Their liquid crystalline behaviors and superstructures were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Hexagonal columnar structure was observed as the mesophases for both with and without the addition of lithium salts.

    We synthesized novel tartaric acid derivatives possessing two rod-like units in twisted parallel. We investigated their helical twisting powers (HTP). Nematic liquid crystals doped with the dopants indicated high HTPs, and exhibited stable blue phases. Their liquid-crystallinities were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM).

    Chiral propeller-patterned textures were generated spontaneously from achiral benzoic acid derivatives possessing diethyleneoxide tails. In order to investigate the origins of spontaneous chiral induction, we prepared several types of benzoic acids with modified tails. In addition, we have carried out a supramolecular approach to generate chiral propeller-patterned textures. Several H-bond acceptors, bipyridyl and pyrazine for example, were mixed with the benzoic acid derivatives and their phase behaviors were examined.

    For achieving realization of ferroelectric columnar mesophase, we synthesized liquid crystalline urea-compounds. The compounds exhibited rectangular columnar and smectic A liquid crystal phases. We investigated their mesophases and structures by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and one- and two-dimentional X-ray diffractions (XRD). In addition, we investigated their ferroelectric switching behaviors by applying a triangular wave voltage. As a result, all compounds showed a response to the electric field but did not show ferroelectric behavior.

As a result, some compounds indicated high-speed ferroelectric switching and stability of the polarization.

    To investigate the influence of molecular structure of dopants for stabilization of blue phases, we prepared dopant compounds which had different spatial arrangements of chiral mesogens, and they were added to 5CB, respectively. The mixture of 5CB with a tripodant compound showed the widest temperature range of the blue phase in this series, and compounds possessing two mesogens at o-, m- and p- positions of benzenes indicated a clear difference in the temperature range of the blue phase. We suggested the mechanism for stabilization of the blue phases.

    The rodlike molecules, 4-alkoxy-3, 5-bis (hydroxymethyl) benzoic acids, possessing two hydrogen bonding sites in the direction of short axes were synthesized and their thermal transition behavior was investigated. These molecules showed smectic liquid crystal phases with alkylamines investigated with polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The effect of hydrogen bondings in the direction of short axes was examined in comparison with the single crystal X-ray structure of an ester derivative.
