RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To analyze morphological changes in patients with COVID-19-associated pneumonia over time, a nonrigid registration technique is required that reduces differences in respiratory phase and imaging position and does not excessively deform the lesion region. A nonrigid registration method using deep learning was applied for lung field alignment, and its practicality was verified through quantitative evaluation, such as image similarity of whole lung region and image similarity of lesion region, as well as visual evaluation by a physician. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, the lung field positions and sizes of the first and second CT images were roughly matched using a classical registration method based on iterative calculations as a preprocessing step. Then, voxel-by-voxel transformation was performed using VoxelMorph, a nonrigid deep learning registration method. As an objective evaluation, the similarity of the images was calculated. To evaluate the invariance of image features in the lesion site, primary statistics and 3D shape features were calculated and statistically analyzed. Furthermore, as a subjective evaluation, the similarity of images and whether nonrigid transformation caused unnatural changes in the shape and size of the lesion region were visually evaluated by a pulmonologist. RESULTS: The proposed method was applied to 509 patient data points with high image similarity. The variances in histogram characteristics before and after image deformation were confirmed. Visual evaluation confirmed the agreement between the shape and internal structure of the lung field and the natural deformation of the lesion region. CONCLUSION: The developed nonrigid registration method was shown to be effective for quantitative time series analysis of the lungs.

Abstract A stroke is a medical emergency and thus requires immediate treatment. Paramedics should accurately assess suspected stroke patients and promptly transport them to a hospital with stroke care facilities; however, current assessment procedures rely on subjective visual assessment. We aim to develop an automatic evaluation system for central facial palsy (CFP) that uses RGB cameras installed in an ambulance. This paper presents two evaluation indices, namely the symmetry of mouth movement and the difference in mouth shape, respectively, extracted from video frames. These evaluation indices allow us to quantitatively evaluate the degree of facial palsy. A classification model based on these indices can discriminate patients with CFP. The results of experiments using our dataset show that the values of the two evaluation indices are significantly different between healthy subjects and CFP patients. Furthermore, our classification model achieved an area under the curve of 0.847. This study demonstrates that the proposed automatic evaluation system has great potential for quantitatively assessing CFP patients based on two evaluation indices.

Accurately estimating the spectral reflectance of art paintings from low-dimensional multichannel images requires that both image-acquisition hardware with appropriate spectral characteristics and appropriate estimation software be applied to the captured multichannel image. In this study, a system that incorporates both factors is designed and developed on the basis of the minimum-mean-square error criterion. The accuracy of spectral estimation by use of this system is evaluated, and the system's high performance is demonstrated. © 2000 Optical Society of America.

The image of spectral absorbance in human skin is analyzed by independent component analysis. The spectral absorbance image is estimated from an image with red, green, and blue channels. The qualitative information and spatial distribution of the pigments can be extracted by the independent component analysis. It is shown that the extracted absorption characteristics of the pigments are corresponding to those of hemoglobin and melanin.

To deduce the optical properties, the absorption coefficient mu(a) and reduced scattering coefficient mu(s)', of turbid medium, Lin et al. (Appl. Opt. 34 (1995) 2362) proposed an oblique incidence reflectometry in which the diffusion approximation was assumed. In this paper we propose an alternative method which does not assume the diffusion approximation but uses a Monte Carlo light propagation model. Two features are extracted from the diffuse reflectance distribution detected on the medium surface, and optical properties are then estimated by looking up the predetermined table generated by Monte Carlo simulations. The validity of the proposed method has been confirmed by computer simulations.

We propose a Wiener filtering method that can improve the total quality of images corrupted by additive noise without degrading the sharpness caused by the noise reduction process. In contrast with conventional Wiener filtering techniques,(1)-3)) the Wiener filters proposed in this paper are designed so as to minimize the mean square error between the original and restored images in RGB color space. The Wiener filters are calculated from the covariance matrices of the observed images on the basis of the assumptions that the original image and noise have no correlation each other, and the noise covariance can be estimated at system calibration stage or from a uniform density area in the image. The covariance matrices of the observed images are estimated from the neighboring pixels which are selected around the current pixel with a color classification technique. The noisy images generated by computer simulations were restored and evaluated both objectively and subjectively. As a result, we confirmed the proposed method is effective to improve the quality of noisy images compared with the conventional filters.

Mapping pigmentation in human skin is expected to give useful information in reproducing and diagnosing various skin colors. In this research, maps of melanin, oxyhemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin in skin are estimated from multi-visible-spectral image by using an inverse optical scattering technique. In the inverse optical scattering technique, first of all, a forward model of optical scattering is build to simulate the spectral reflectance of skin. Changing the variable parameters in the forward model, the simulation is repeated until the simulated spectral reflectance matches with the spectral reflectance at each pixel of the multi-spectral image. The principle of the proposed estimation technique was confirmed by imaging the human forearm under the venous occlusion, the venous and arterial occlusion, and by imaging a slapped region of the human forearm.

In this study, MTFs of papers which included both mechanical and optical dot gain were measured from samples printed by an ink jet printer on glossy coated, matte-coated and uncoated papers, MTFs were measured from sinusoidal patterns and Fourier transform of line spread function from one-pixel line and step image. Those obtained MTFs were analyzed and compared in both horizontal and vertical printing direction. In addition, MTF of paper related to optical dot gain were also measured by contacting sinusoidal pattern on papers. The MTF of print and MTF of paper showed nonlinear relationship. Finally reflection densities were predicted by MTF of print measured from printed step image and it was found that reflection density is not well predicted when comparing to the reflection density measured by a conventional densiometer.

We have proposed a new method for facial pattern detection from color negative film for exposure control in printing. The flexible template is introduced to measure the density distribution of facial region in color negative film. The template is divided into six sub-templates corresponding to eyes, cheeks, nose and mouth. The optimal boundaries in template are decided on the basis of the AIC theory (Akaike Information Criterion). The facial region is detected by using relationship between AIC value and density distribution in six regions and chromaticity value in each region. The detection experiment used 677 scenes taken by color negative film gave 80\% correct result.

Digital imaging systems consist of three devices; acquisition, recording, and display. In this research, the system is formulated as linear model for evaluating and improving the total image quality with respect to sharpness and graininess. On the basis of the model, the subjective quality of degraded image is estimated, then the model is applied to improve the image quality. The experimental results showed that the method proposed in this research is effective for evaluation and improvement of the image quality.

A spectral color reproduction method is proposed based on a vector error diffusion method. A low-dimensional linear model is used to approximate reflectance spectra, and the vector error diffusion is performed in a score vector space of the linear model. A suitable set of primary colors is also selected from oil colors. Presented method performed better than conventional colorimetric vector error diffusion method for robust color reproduction for a change of illuminant.

The method proposed for extracting goniospectral information of 3D objects is reformulated in more exact form. Especially the illumination direction is expressed in both azimuthal and elevation angle. It is shown that extending the range of illumination direction to two dimension leads to provide useful model parameters including the surface normal of the object. Experimental results of the display simulation are also presented to demonstrate the visual effect of changing the light source distribution.

The quality of images produced by multi-level error diffusion was evaluated both subjectively and objectively. The images were recorded on color transparencies by a digital film recorder with a resolution of 1600 dpi. Thirty-six sample images with four different resolutions and nine different quantization levels were prepared, and the tone reproduction, color reproduction, graininess and sharpness of the images were analyzed and evaluated. We found that the graininess gives the strongest influence on the quality of the image. The relationship between observer rating values and measured quality criteria are also discussed.

We have developed the multiband color imaging systems in the frame work of the IPA project as New Color Management System Based on Human Perception. This system consisted of multiband CCD camera, computer, CRT and projection type monitor. Five band images were taken by CCD camera with 2048×2048 pixels. Reflectance spectra of the object were estimated by the principal component analysis and Wiener estimation method. Spectral transmittance of separation filter was optimized by simulated annealing method based on Wiener estimation. Color adaptation model was introduced for accurate color reproduction of paintings based on human perception. In this paper, estimation of spectral reflectance of paintings, developed multiband camera, various software for image composition and control of multiband camera are introduced and demonstrated.

Transmittance spectra of optical micrograph of fungi were estimated from seven band images based on the Wiener estimation method. The optical microscope adjusted with monochrome digital camera (Kodak DCS420m, 1536 × 1024 pixels) with seven band filters was used for image acquisition. Transmittance spectra of 16 color transparencies were measured by spectral photometer in advance, and the seven band images of color transparency were taken by microscopic imaging system. A matrix for Wiener estimation was calculated using these measured transmittance spectra and camera responses. As the result of Wiener estimation, normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) between the original and estimated transmittance spectra of 16 color transparencies was 0.035. Wiener estimation method was applied to estimate the spectral transmittance of five species which belong to one genus of fungi. Transmittance spectra of fungi were calculated from camera responses in each pixel and the above estimation matrix. The estimated transmittance spectra were used for segmentation of conidia and hyphae in fungal microscopic image to identify them. Competitive learning in neural network was applied to the segmentation from spectral microscopic image. It was found that segmentation based on spectral transmittance was more accurate than the segmentation based on RGB values.

A new technique is proposed to improve the way of selecting samples used to estimate spectral reflectance from sensor responses in multi-band images. This technique limits the samples of re reflectance spectra based on the spectral reflectance estimated by the conventional estimation method, and estimates it again using the limited samples. Vector angle and distance among reflectance spectra as the criteria for the limitation can be applied to improve the estimation of reflectance spectra.

The design of spectral characteristic of the light source in an optical endoscope is discussed. First, two criteria are introduced for the evaluation of the light source and the evaluation result for two CIE standard illuminants and 15 light sources commercially available is presented. Next, an optimization method using POCS (projection onto convex set) is proposed for the design of the light source. It is shown that the optimum light source achieves much better score for the introduced criteria than the 17 light sources. Simulation of image reproduction of mucous membrane under an arbitrary light source is also described.

We are developing a spectral characteristics database for evaluating color reproduction in image input devices. The database is designed so that spectral characteristics are systematically divided by category, according to the purpose to which they are to be applied, and every category has a sufficient variety of samples. The categories are as follows: photographic materials, graphic color printing, computer color printers output, paints, flowers, leaves, human skin colors and historical Krinov data. The total number of colors is 49, 672. The database is being proposed to be published as Japanese / International standard technical reports for use in establishing a new color reproduction evaluation method.

A multiband imaging system with multi-angle illumination and a processing algorithm for multiband images acquired by the system are presented for extracting goniospectral information of 3D objects. Based on a dichromatic reflection model, multiband images are separated into diffuse and specular components. Then, the model parameters are determined pixelwise and archived. Using these parameters, an image of the 3D object under an arbitrary spectral and spatial distribution of illuminant can be predicted and displayed. A fundamental experiment to confirm the principle of this method is presented.

The spatial distributions of melanin and hemoglobin in human skin are separated by independent component analysis of skin color image. It is our goal to apply these results for the estimation of preferred skin color in color reproduction and the evaluation of a face browned by the sun and diagnosis of a skin disease. In this paper, the principle of independent component analysis is described and it is also shown that the components of melanin and hemoglobin from skin color image can be separated both theoretically and experimentally.
